Movies based on fan fictions

Fanfictions are a boon to the fans when they are just not ready to accept that their favorite novels, movies, or shows have ended. It is also a form of freedom for us to imagine our beloved characters in the settings and situations that we want. For years, websites like fanfiction.net, WattPad, AO3, etc., have worked as a free platform for fans to write any form of literature featuring characters and celebrities from around the world. Some fanfics are better than the original novels while some are downright nasty. With them gaining massive popularity over the years, it is obvious that they will attract the attention of movie producers as well. After all, a good story is just that, a good story, no matter where it was published first. So, here is a list of movies based on fanfictions.

50 Shades of Grey

When it comes to fanfictions that turned into movies, the first name that comes to any mind is the massive erotic hit 50 Shades of Grey. The original fanfiction was published on a fanfiction website and was based on Twilight books. Yep, the sexy Christian Grey we know now went by the name of Edward Cullen before the novels gained much following, and the names were changed. After selling more than a million copies around the world, the books turned into movies that fared really well for something that did not have any story to speak of.

Also known as 50 Shades of Grey for teens, the After fanfiction was based on the former One Direction singer Harry Styles. I am guilty of indulging in quite a few Harry Styles fanfiction. After is the first of two movies based on the-fanfiction-turned-novels and released last year, making the hearts of a million girls shake. The story has a lot of issues regarding the behavior of the main leads but as with a lot of media releases, people seem to forget it when the cast is drop-dead gorgeous. The sequel, After We Collided, is set to hit the theatres in Portugal in September of this year.

Kissing Booth

There are a ton of young adult and adult fiction in the world of fanfictions and The Kissing Booth is one of them. The story follows a high school girl, Elle, who opens a kissing booth in the spring carnival. Soon she finds herself kissing her long-time crush, Noah, the forbidden boy. The Kissing Booth may have failed to impress the critics with its overused themes but remains one of the fan-favorite movies. The second installment of this popular fanfiction movie, The Kissing Booth 2, recently released on Netflix.

Light As A Feather, Stiff As A Board

This story was released on Wattpad, earning more than 3 million reads and was later adopted by Hulu back in 2018. It surprised the audience with the absence of romance that is so common in usual fanfiction novels. Though, in the true sense, the book is not really a fanfiction as the author has not stated the inspiration of the creepy story. A bunch of high school girls at a sleepover decide to play the Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board game. The twist? The girls start dying one by one.

The Mortal Instruments

Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments novels gained exploding fame when it was published in 2007. It had all the elements that were in our guilty pleasure list, from a gloomy, stoic, but the hot guy to the magic that has a firm foundation. The novels started out as a Harry Potter fanfiction, originally named as Draco Trilogy. The movie that was released back in 2013 was a disappointment to the fans, as is the norm with most book-to-movie adaptations. After this, Netflix released the story as a series named Shadowhunters in 2016.

The times are gone when fanfictions used to be filled with smut or fluff and only worked as a way to pent off our fantasies and desires. Some fanfictions, written by amateur writers who possess nothing but sheer determination, can be some of the best books waiting to see the light of the day, or at least, the lights of a publishing house. Recently, fanfiction platforms like Wattpad have been giving an opportunity to such writers to publish their fanfictions as novels. What is your most favorite fanfiction?
