After the ever-growing popularity of the Rick and Morty animated series, and due to the current coronavirus pandemic, fans are eagerly waiting for the season 5 of Rick and Morty. Since the rest of the Season 4 came out this May, fans have been on a lookout for the new instalment. As of May 2018, 70 episodes were confirmed and all doubts of whether there is going to be a fifth season or not were thrown right out of the window
Work on the animation of Rick and Morty Season 5 started way before the pandemic. The series creator, Dan Harmon promised fans that there won’t be as long a wait as there was between season 3 and season 4 (two long dreadful years of waiting). Fans can expect the new episodes to hit Adult Swim sooner than expected.
Things that stayed in Rick and Morty Season 4
After the wrap up of season 4, it is understood that there are 60 episodes more to go. With more free time on their hands due to the pandemic, dedicated fans have cooked up tons of theories and predictions for the upcoming season of Rick and Morty. But let us first take a gander at the things that had a major impact in Season 4.
The creators used the last episode to mock several story arcs by making a Star Wars Parody, where they joked about Death Stars, invisibility belts, and corporate sponsors. Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon also decided to bring back some of the major characters in this episode, particularly, Tammy (Played by Cassie Steele) and Birdperson (Played by Dan Harmon) who is now fully upgraded and goes by Phoenixperson.
The Second Beth
Another shocking thing that happened in this Rick and Morty season was the return of the Second Beth (Played by Sarah Chalke) who is now a freedom fighter against Tammy’s new and improved Galactic Federation.
Second Beth was introduced at the end of Season 3 when Rick cloned his own daughter. Since then, fans have been waiting to see how the writers and creators will bring back that dark turn successfully. Suffice to say, they did not disappoint the fans.
The dull conclusion of Rick and Morty Season 4 proved that even Rick isn’t aware of who among the two is his real daughter. For, he shuffled them during creation and randomly sent one of them into the universe. (Or, maybe he does?)
Things you can expect from Rick and Morty Season 5
The script for season 5 has been written since at least September 2019. The writer Jeff Loveness posted a photo of the script of episode 1 on twitter.
Today was my last day at Rick and Morty. I wrote 5 episodes and worked with amazing people. I hope you like it. pic.twitter.com/WjrMRP7i7j— Jeff Loveness (@JeffLoveness) September 21, 2019
That is not to say that the animation is complete as it takes several hours more. And, the addition of new worlds and characters in every episode also makes Rick and Morty more demanding as well as time-consuming. But, 10 long months have passed since then. It is highly likely that they have completed most of the animation by now.
However, Sarah Chalke has admitted that there have been obstructions in the way of production due to the current global pandemic situation. Given Rick and Morty’s track record and the extreme delays in the production throughout the industry, it is clear that fans will have to wait a while before the new season hits Adult Swim.
The unpredictable and ever-changing nature of the animated series which was again reflected in Rick and Morty season 4 has made it extremely difficult to predict what may happen next but that has never stopped fans from cooking up their own theories and predictions.
One such theory I read on Reddit predicted the return of the series antagonist, Evil Morty in the next season. Yet another one was hopeful of a return of the interdimensional cable format. We are still yet to see what happened to the CItadel when Evil Morty is on the throne.
Fans also praised the Season 4 of Rick and Morty all over social media, following a binge-session, claiming these to be one of the best episodes. The fans absolutely loved the plot-heavy episodes as they have been wanting them since forever. The creators managed to give them just that.
Is a trailer released?
There is no official trailer out as of yet but there is a first look available online on Youtube. The clip shows Rick to be stressed out, contemplating death, regretting everything he has ever done. Both Rick and Morty are chased by tentacle-welding monsters before their spaceship hits the ocean and things take a turn.
Here is the clip of the first look at Rick and Morty Season 5:
